Patent Strategies for Phosphor Industry

    - Case Studies

    - Landscape

Intellectual property (IP) has been and will continue to be an important consideration for the phosphor industry.  This seminar will begin with a review of IP basics and move on to more advanced IP topics including re-examination, patent litigation, legal opinions, notice letters, and licensing.  Throughout the presentation, examples will be drawn from phosphor technology and the industry.  The seminar will close with case studies from the phosphor industry and will touch on the complexity of the patent landscape.  The seminar is suitable for those having little or no IP background, as well as those having considerable IP experience.

Seminar instructor: Robert Walat, Shareholder, WOLF GREENFIELD

Seminar # 2 – 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm – Additional fee required

Seminar #2 will be broken into two parts covering the topics of the application issues of phosphors and the basics of luminescence spectroscopy

Application issues of phosphors

  • Fundamental aspects of luminescence
  • Two high efficiency lighting technologies: phosphors for CFL and solid state lighting (LED) technologies

This seminar will provide an overview of rare earths and transition metal ion activated inorganic luminescent materials (phosphors) with applications in energy efficient and long life Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Major topics to be covered include selection of the host lattice and the luminescent ion, phosphor properties and performance. The seminar will also address technical and scientific issues for phosphor coatings in CFLs and LEDs. The seminar is designed for those who are fairly new to this field and for those who need a refresher course on the basics of the technology.

Dr. Alok Srivastava, Researcher, GE GLOBAL RESEARCH

BASICS OF LUMINESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY

·         Principles of energy level schemes of luminescent ions

·         Insight in radiative and non-radiative transitions and energy transfer

·         Illustration of principles in LED-phosphors and through exercises

The seminar will cover fundamental aspects of luminescence spectroscopy and will provide those who are less familiar with luminescence phenomena a solid introduction into the basics of the field. The lectures will give insight in the energy level structure of lanthanides and transition metal ions and it will discuss the most important processes involved in luminescent materials, including radiative and non-radiative decay processes and energy transfer. The seminar will be illustrated with examples to demonstrate the link between fundamental processes and phosphor performance. In the end exercises will be given to  give the opportunity to apply the theory to ‘real’ problems.
