4th Commonwealth Sports Development Conference
Sport and Empowering the Youth of the Commonwealth

Monday 12 & Tuesday 13 August 2013
The Mitchell Library, Glasgow, Scotland

Introduction

One of the world’s longest running conferences on international sports development returned to Glasgow and the Mitchell Library on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 August.  The 4th Commonwealth Sports Development Conference programme put Youth centre stage and focussed on the development of a Youth Sport Charter

The final conference programme for the two days can be downloaded from here and the video highlights from the two days can be viewed here

Over 300 Sport Practitioners, Policy Makers and various types of Funders came together to explore the role and responsibilities of Commonwealth sporting stakeholders and governmental agencies in improving opportunities for participation and pathways to personal excellence, as well as looking at how young people can have greater influence on sports policy and decision making.

Commonwealth Games Associations worldwide attended the conference, many of whom were making their final visit to Glasgow prior to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.  The event provided  a superb opportunity for networking and discussions on international issues and programmes and provided the ideal platform to showcase global best practice.

The Conference featured high profile speakers from the world of sport and sport for development and explored the links between the two.  In addition, there were two key sub-programmes:

Disability Sport and Young People

Empowering Girls and Young Women through Sport

Youth Sport Charter
A key element of the conference was the development of a Conference Youth Sport Charter and key message; a shared statement on sport and empowering the youth of the Commonwealth from all who attended the event. The message was presented to representatives of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Commonwealth Games Federation, Scottish Government, the City of Glasgow and UK Sport.

During the closing ceremony, attendees heard how the young people of the Commonwealth Sport and Peace Development Working Group were each going to send a copy of the Charter to ten people, and ask that they in turn share with another ten people, in order to spread the key message of involving and engaging young people in decision making.

Likewise, the conference partners received the participants' request for the Charter to be shared with the highest levels of Government and the international sport movement and, since the close of Conference, it has already been shared at the Commonwealth Advisory Board on Sport meeting.

The final version of the Charter and message is now available to download from here.
