EU Committee Business Dinner - Sefcovic
Tuesday, 22 November 2011 20:00 - 22:00

Hotel Le Plaza

Boulevard Adolphe Max 118-126
Brussels
Belgium

Launched earlier this year, the Transparency Register set out to list all organisations and self-employed individuals who directly or indirectly affect policy making. This level of openness has received mixed reviews from the Brussels audience. With the Register now in place we ask Commissioner Šefčovič and Diana Wallis MEP what’s next for the Transparency Register and developing the role of lobbying after the Lisbon Treaty at a Business Dinner where they will give a 20min speech followed by a moderated Q&A session.

Mr Šefčovič is convinced that the new Lisbon Treaty  is crucial to put the EU on a completely new footing, make EU decisions more understandable to the public, enable the EU institutions to work together more intensively and make the EU a stronger global actor. One of his tasks is to build consensus between EU institutions on major policies by working closely with the European Parliament, Council, Committee of the Regions, Economic and Social Committee, Ombudsman and national parliaments.

As Vice-President, Diana Wallis is responsible for access to documents and transparency in the last mandate. On 12th January 2009, through her work on the Bureau, she obtained agreement for the publication of official attendance records for Members with the support of Parliament's plenary. Based on her first hand experience of the US Congress in 2007, Diana authored a report on lobbyists which gained widespread support amongst her colleagues. She was then nominated to sit on the inter-institutional High Level working group working on a common register and code of conduct for lobbyists, and became closely involved in the Commission's "Transparency Initiative".
