About the conference

IntertechPira’s China Magnetics 2009 conference brought the permanent magnets supply chain to Shanghai, China for an in-depth discussion of recent trends and developments within China’s magnet and magnetic materials industry.

Topics addressed included:

  • Global permanent magnet industry overview and outlook
  • Competitive intelligence for navigating the Chinese permanent magnet industry
  • Insight into other magnet markets including Japan, Europe, and North America
  • Coverage of established and emerging magnet applications including automotive, motors, recycling, wind turbines, digital storage, and consumer electronics.
  • Important scientific and technical developments affecting magnet supply, demand, and innovation.

Pulse of the industry

China is by far the largest producer of rare earth permanent magnets, accounting for over 78% of the market in 2006. Additionally, China is the fastest growing producer of permanent magnets (sintered and finished magnets) with an average annual growth rate of 31%, followed by Japan and parts of Europe for finished magnets, which average growth rates of 15% and 6%, respectively. A plateau of production capacity and output of Nd-Fe-B magnets, combined with both increased international and domestic demand for rare earth magnets has resulted in price hikes which has squeezed margins for suppliers of finished magnets.

The expression, “a rising tide lifts all boats” could never be more accurate to describe the permanent magnet industry; growth in industries requiring substantial amount of bonded and sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets have resulted in increased global magnet consumption. Environmental and climate change concerns have spurred growth in the green energy sector. Ranging from wind energy to applications in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), hybrid and maglev trains, permanent magnets are playing a pivotal role with providing renewable energy and energy efficiency. Other sectors using permanent magnets have also experienced growth, including digital storage and hard disc drives (HDD), magnetic resonance image (MRI) applications, and consumer electronic products. Be sure to attend China Magnetics 2009 to obtain competitive intelligence on the outlook for permanent magnets in established and emerging markets in China and around the globe.
